Hazel was 11 years old when she discovered athletics. She was already involved in sport and enjoyed swimming and horse riding, but found she was better at athletics after taking part in the British Open championships. She later went on to be the Junior DSE champion for seven years running in the 100m, 200m and 400m.

The Sunderland sprinter was the Norwich Union Great Britain and Northern Ireland team's first medallist on the track at the 2006 World Championships in Assen

Hazel, who has a dolphin tattoo on her tummy, is planning to break from the sport to start a family with her new husband after the Beijing Paralympics in 2008. Her aim is to be back competing for the London Paralympics in 2012, where she hopes to win a medal.
