Yelling’s marathon nightmare in Berlin

Liz Yelling
Liz Yelling (Bedford and County AC) is thinking of entering another marathon this autumn after suffering “a nightmare” in the real-Berlin Marathon on Sunday 24 September.

As she stood on the start line, the Commonwealth Games Bronze medallist had high hopes of enhancing her reputation, then having an operation on a shoulder that has hampered her for eight months before launching into a bid for a place in the Norwich Union Great Britain and Northern Ireland team at the European Cross Country Championships in Italy in December.

In fact, she reports: “I had a really bad tummy at 3km. Then I had cramps at 14km. So I dropped out but then kept trying to restart. I eventually got to 30km run-walking. By then my hip was in pain, too. That was what eventually stopped me.

“I’m gutted but may look to run another marathon as I know I am in good shape.”

The Berlin winners were Haile Gebrselassie in 2 hours 5 minutes 56 seconds, the fastest time in the world this year, and his Ethiopian compatriot Gete Wami in 2:21:34.
