Britain’s leading wheelchair racers have concluded their North American tour in style as David Weir and Shelly Woods both clinched their places in the 1500m races at this summer’s IAAF World Championships in Osaka, Japan.
The duo both earned their places from the official trials at the Boiling Point track Classic in Windsor, Canada on Saturday.
Only the leading eight in the male and female events qualified for the exhibition races in Osaka. Unfortunately, Britain’s other contender Brian Alldis just missed out in the men’s final, finishing 9th.
Weir won a tactical men’s race in 3:14.18, whilst Woods placed fourth with 3:37.25 to comfortably book their passages through. The meeting rounded off a fine trip for the British contingent, which included victory at the IWAS World 5k Road Championships and world records on the track over 1500m and 5000m by Weir.
Other notable successes were Shelly Woods’ new UK record over 10k and PBs aplenty for the rapidly developing Alldis and Anne Wafula-Strike.
