Chris Tomlinson leaps below par in Madrid

UK long jump record holder Chris Tomlinson (Newham and Essex Beagles) was the only UK competitor at the IAAF Grand Prix in Madrid, Spain, on Monday evening, 17 July.

Having leapt 7.87m for second place at the Norwich Union European Trials, incorporating the UK Championships and AAA of England Championships, at Manchester’s Sportcity on Saturday 15 July, he had a best on the night of 7.80m (wind: +1.9 m/s) in Madrid.

James Beckford (Jamaica), the 1996 Olympic Silver medallist, won with 8.15m (wind: 0.0) – 11cm less than the winning distance achieved by 19-year-old Greg Rutherford when he got to within 1cm of Tomlinson’s national record at Manchester.
