International Paralympic Committee – Functional Classification

 

Please find below a rough guide to IPC Classification, the system used to ensure fair competition at the Paralympic Games and related athletics competitions. This should be used purely as a guide and for more information please use the National Disability Sport Organisation (NDSO) contact details below or contact UK Athletics.

 

The following classification groups are eligible to compete at the Paralympic Games in accordance with the rules and standards set by IPC but please be aware that not every event is available to every athlete.

 

T – Track

F – Field

 

T/F 11-13  Athletes with a Visual Impairment

T/F 31-38  Athletes with Cerebral Palsy

T/F 40-46  Amputee & Les Autres (including Dwarf Athletes)

T 51-54     Wheelchair Racers

F 51-58     Seated Field Athletes

 

 

Functional Classification

 

Athletes with a Visual Impairment

T11 or F11

  • No light perception in either eye
  • Light perception, unable to recognise the shape of a hand at any distance or direction

T12 or F12

  • Ability to recognise the shape of a hand to a visual acuity of 2/60
  • Visual field of less than 5 degrees

T13 or F13

  • Visual acuity between 2/60 – 6/60
  • Visual field of more than 5 degrees & less than 20 degrees

Athletes with Cerebral Palsy

T31 or F31

  • Quadriplegia – athletes usually use an electric wheelchair or assistance for mobility

T32 or F32

  • Quadriplegia – athletes usually propel a manual wheelchair

T33 or F33

           Wheelchair racers or seated throwers with:

  • Affected lower limbs
  • Fair functional strength & moderate coordination in upper limbs

T34 or F34

      Wheelchair racers or seated throwers with:

  • Impairment in lower limbs
  • Coordination in upper limbs & trunk

T35 or F35

      Ambulant athletes with:

  • Impairment in upper & lower limbs with greater functional ability in lower limbs

T36 or F36

           Ambulant athletes with:

  • Impairment in upper & lower limbs with greater functional ability in upper limbs

T37 or F37

      Ambulant athletes with:

  • Moderate to minimal hemiplegia

T38 or F38

      Ambulant athletes with:

  • Minimal impairment

Amputee & Les Autres

T40 or F40

  • Dwarf Athletes

T41 or F41

  • Double above knee amputee or physical impairment allowing similar movement

T42 or F42

  • Single above knee amputee or physical impairment allowing similar movement

T43 or F43

  • Double below knee amputee or physical impairment allowing similar movement

T44 or F44

  • Single below knee amputee or physical impairment allowing similar movement

T45 or F45

  • Double above or below elbow amputee or physical impairment allowing similar movement

T46 or F46

  • Single above or below elbow amputee or physical impairment allowing similar movement

Wheelchair Racers

T51

  • Quadriplegia – fair/good shoulder function, bicep (no tricep) function, rotate wrists up & out (not down & in)
  • No finger & thumb function

T52

  • Quadriplegia – good shoulder, biceps, triceps & wrist function
  • Good finger & thumb function

T53

  • Paraplegia – affecting lower limbs & trunk, good shoulder, biceps, triceps, wrist & finger function
  • No functional use of back, abdominal & lower limb muscles

T54

  • Paraplegia – affecting lower limbs
  • Lower limb amputees

Seated Field Athletes

F51

  • Quadriplegia – fair/good shoulder function, bicep (no tricep) function, rotate wrists up & out (not down & in)
  • No finger & thumb function

F52

  • Quadriplegia - good shoulder, biceps, triceps & wrist function
  • Limited finger function & no thumb function

F53

  • Quadriplegia - good shoulder, biceps, triceps & wrist function
  • Limited finger & thumb function

F54

  • Paraplegia – affecting lower limbs & trunk, good shoulder, biceps, triceps, wrist & finger function.
  • No functional use of back, abdominal & lower limb muscles

F55

  • Functional use of abdominal muscles & lower back muscles allow turning
  • Able to raise knees

F56

  • Functional use of abdominal & lower back muscle
  • Able to lift knees & squeeze knees together
  • Functional ability to straighten & bend knees varies between athletes

F57

  • Functional use of abdominal & lower back muscles
  • Ability to lift knees, squeeze knees together & spread knees apart
  • Functional ability to straighten & bend knees varies between athletes
  • Ankle & toe function varies between athletes
  • Ability to weight bare

F58

  • Minimal impairment, including lower single above knee amputee / below knee amputee
