With the school summer holidays drawing to a close, athletes in Luton were delighted to receive a visit from 800m star Becky Lyne on Friday.

Lyne, who is currently training at the UK Athletics Endurance Centre in Twickenham, took time out of her training schedule to take part in an intensive question and answer session, before presenting the athletes with their star:track certificates.

Javelin ace visits York star:track - 30 Aug 07

James Campbell, holder of the Scottish Javelin record, today gave York youngsters a fascinating insight into what is required to compete at the top level of athletics.

Campbell, who last summer was competing at the World Junior Championships in Beijing, gave the aspiring athletes a practical demonstration of his Javelin throwing, before putting them through their paces in a coaching session.

The event, organised by City of York Council, is part of an innovative project spearheaded by star:track sponsors, Norwich Union, whereby the children of Norwich Union staff are offered opportunities to participate in athletics.

The project has now been successfully piloted in York and Norwich, both of which are key Norwich Union locations. Danny Nobbs, Commercial Sponsorship Consultant for Norwich Union said

"The success of these two events clearly demonstrates that Norwich Union staff and their families have a passion and enthusiasm for athletics from the grassroots to the very top level.

We are delighted to work alongside UK Athletics and organisations such as City of York Council, to ensure that more children are given the opportunity to take part in athletics"

As with all star:track events, the youngsters left armed with a stack of information about ways in which they can continue their involvement in the sport, after attending their star:track event.

Luton star:track highlights importance of club links - 15 Aug 07

The wind and rain failed to dampen the sprits of athletes attending the Norwich Union star:track event in Luton yesterday. Record numbers of children have attended the schemes, which are taking place at the Stockwood Park track, home of Luton AC.

The importance of offering opportunities for the youngsters to continue with athletics after star:track, is recognised by Active Luton, who are organising the scheme. As well as working hard to develop a pathway for athletes to move into the local club, Community Athletics Coach, Catrina Lewis, has also recruited a group of young club athletes to assist with the running of the camp.

The athletes, many of whom have previously taken part in star:track, are helping UK Athletics qualified coaches to organise warm ups and activities, as well as encouraging the newer athletes to become involved in more regular athletics, either at the club, or as part of the many after school sessions that take place in the area.
