COMMERCIAL PARTNERS
UKA currently receives almost £19 million from funding partners – over 60% of which are commercial sponsorship deals. UKA also currently have three main non-commercial investors in the BBC, UK Sport and Sport England.
Some of our commercial partners offer free / discounted products and services to members of the GB and NI Athletics Team. To find out what offers are available, email athletecontracts@ukathletics.org.uk
Some commercial partners have rights associated with the Norwich Union GB & NI Team, (known as Team Partners) and you may be provided with their products and services during training camps and competitions. These commercial partners may be eligible to use imagery of the GB and NI Team in promoting their association with UKA and the team, however they will not promote an association with an individual athlete. You may be asked to attend press conferences with these partners at events.
Whilst participating in Official GB & NI Team Duties, you must not wear, display, incorporate or promote any logo, device or promotional wording of a third party which conflicts or competes with any products or services of a GB & NI Team Partner, nor make use of any sponsored goods supplied by any third party which conflicts or competes with the products or services of a Team Partner without the prior written approval of UKA. UKA will carefully consider requests for permission and will recognise the legitimate right of the Athlete to engage in commercial activity for his/her own benefit, amongst other things UKA will need to establish whether a genuine conflict or competition exists, and it may be for instance that a company in the same product category but operating on a purely local basis does not ‘compete’ with a Team Partner who operates nationally and/or internationally.
ATHLETE APPEARANCES
In order to support the work of UKA and to recognise the association between UKA and a commercial partner you may be asked to complete a number of athlete appearances. Each athlete may be requested to complete up to two appearances on behalf of UKA and one on behalf of the Athletics Foundation. If you are requested to carry out any additional appearances to the above you will be paid at an identified rate of between £500 - £2000 depending upon your commercial category as identified annually by UKA. You will be notified of your category on an annual basis.
Appearance requests could include visits to local schools, athletics activity sessions or clubs, attending a meeting, photo shoot or interview or supporting a charitable event. The dominant purpose of all appearances will be to promote UKA, one or more of the Commercial Partners' association with UKA and/or the GB & NI Athletics Team, the Sports Councils or the sport.
Prior to any appearances you will receive a brief and be informed of the clothing requirements for the appearance.
MEDIA REQUIREMENTS
As part of the official GB & NI Team duties you may be required to attend media and press interviews. These will all be coordinated through the communications officers who are supporting that event.
As a member of the GB & NI Team, you agree not to make any public statement (whether made as part of a formal interview or not), which is derogatory of UKA, the Commercial Partners, or any of the bodies working to promote high performance sport in the UK, nor to make any public statement, which constitutes a "personal attack" upon another sporting competitor. Fair comment upon a fellow competitor made without the use of offensive language where the substance of the comment is known (or can be shown) to be true will not constitute a "personal attack".
If you wish to ensure into any agreement which may include you working in any media capacity in any period leading up to, during or after a major competition, whether as a print journalist, on the radio or television or by providing exclusive interviews or diaries or columns you must obtain prior approval from UKA. At certain events are precluded from working in a media capacity and advise on this can be obtained from your Team Leader.
USE OF IMAGES
As a member of the GB & NI team, you should recognise that:
-
UKA (and through it the Commercial Partners) may use your name, image, likeness, performance and appearance in events or activities (including photographs, film and recordings of performance and appearance). No use is permitted whatsoever if such use would be detrimental to the reputation of the athlete or otherwise derogatory or offensive.
-
UKA will only be entitled to make use of your image in connection with the promotion, publicity or explanation of the GB & NI Athletics Team, and any athletics specific activity. UKA is also entitled to use your image for archive and historical record purposes.
-
not suggest that you overtly endorses a particular product or service of the Commercial Partner or otherwise
-
ensure that at least two other Athletes on the GB and NI Team members are shown in the same promotion with roughly equal prominence; and
-
not conflict with any personal endorsements that you have in place.
-
Where a Commercial Partner intends to use photographs or footage taken from an commercial appearance you have made or otherwise obtained from UKA, UKA will consult with you in relation to the proposed use of the image by a Commercial Partner prior to the athlete’s appearance being confirmed to the Commercial Partner.
UK ATHLETICS FUNDING and COMMERCIAL PARTNERS
UK Sport
UK Sport is the Government agency responsible for maximising British success in the Olympic and Paralympic Games through investing in, and supporting, our most talented athletes. It was established in 1997 following the introduction of the National Lottery - and specifically a change in Lottery legislation in 1996 to allow investment in people as well as facilities. This latter change enabled a systematic programme of investment to be put in place around our best sportsmen and women.
The result has been to transform the nation's Olympic and Paralympic fortunes. Great Britain moved from being Olympic also-rans at the Atlanta Games in 1996 to a Top 10 nation in Sydney and Athens. Those results are now the foundations of a move to build a high performance system in this country that is world leading in terms of athlete support, coaching, facilities, training and preparation and delivers lasting success on the international stage.
-
Even if you do not receive Lottery funding direct, the medical support you receive from UKA including physio and massage, in the vast majority of cases is paid for by the Lottery. Lottery funding also contributes towards overseas training trips, equipment costs and the costs of GB Teams travelling to compete abroad.
