Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
It is UK Athletics intention to support the World Half Marathon Championships with athletes who are of the appropriate standard to compete at this level of competition. Setting high guideline standardss provides a realistic appraisal of the competition at these championships. A team of five athletes can be selected to run in each race with three to score.
It is UK Athletics intention to send athletes to these championships in Brazil if they have achieved the following Half Marathon times:-
Individual Team
Men 63.20 64.10
Women 72.20 73.20
There will be a trial race at the Fresh ‘N’ Lo Great Scottish Run Half Marathon on Sunday 7th September, which will incorporate the UK Championships. The first eligible senior male and female athletes will be automatically selected, providing they have achieved the individual qualifying time. Any further selections will be based on all known form, over an appropriate distance, up to and including the trial.
The World Half Marathon selection policy for 2008 will also include a pre selection element. The pre selection policy is included to allow UK Athletics the option to select a number of key athletes based on them having already achieved the individual qualifying time. In addition to having already achieved the individual qualifying time UKA will also look to those individuals with championship pedigree over the Half Marathon and Marathon distance. This will allow the pre selected athletes time to fully prepare for the World Championships. It is intended to announce any pre selections on Tuesday 20th May 2008.
All athletes who do not intend to compete at the trial and wish to be considered for selection must ensure that they advise the Senior Performance Manager for Endurance, Alan Storey, of their situation prior to the selection date on the 7th September 2008.
All performances will be considered in the qualifying period 30th September 2007 to the 7th September 2008. Any athlete who has achieved the qualifying times in a Half Marathon prior to May 1st will be expected to show current form over an appropriate distance prior to the selection date.
For the team times to apply a minimum of three athletes must have achieved the team qualifying times within the stated qualification period and subsequently be selected.
The team will be selected immediately after the trials and announced on Tuesday 9th September 2008.
UK athlete ‘elite’ race entry for the Fresh ‘N’ Lo Great Scottish Run incorporating World Half Marathon Trial and UK Championships can be obtained from the event organiser on request, providing they have achieved the ‘elite’ entry standard of under 66:00 for men and under 76:00 for women. Assistance with travel and accommodation by the event organiser will be offered to UK athletes with the ‘elite’ entry standard.
Athletes with the ‘elite’ entry standard are advised to contact the event organiser Brian Donaldson brian.donaldson@csglasgow.org for further information.
