Cold & Flu Remedies

The perennial problem of cold and flu-related illness is a challenge to athletes hoping to get in some solid winter training.  Do not despair!

Stimulants (found in many cold and flu remedies) are included in the list of prohibited substances published by WADA but are only tested for in samples taken at competitions. Samples taken out-of-competition are not tested for stimulants. Remember, when using cold and flu remedies that stimulants and other substances can remain in the body following use of a product, so beware if you are taking products containing stimulants in the run-up to a competition as you may still test positive at the competition.

When consulting a doctor you are strongly advised to inform him that you may be subject to testing for prohibited substances.  Ask him to ensure that any medication prescribed for you does not contain substances on the WADA list of Prohibited Substances (see the full list on the WADA website at www.wada-ama.org).  If you are using over-the-counter medication remember that even household names can contain prohibited substances and so you should always check the status of the product.  You can do this via the Drug Information Database at  www.didglobal.com or by calling UK Sport on the free-phone number 0800 528 0004 before use.

Athletes must always remember that you are responsible for everything found in your body tissues or fluids (this is termed strict liability). The strict liability rule means that you will be found guilty of an anti-doping rule violation if it is proved that a prohibited substance was found within a sample provided by you regardless of whether you intended to take it or did not know that the substance was in the medication taken by you.

If you are required to take a prohibited substance for medical purposes, you must obtain prior exemption from UKA in writing.  Please see the Guide to the Therapeutic Use Exemption system which is available below:
