Procedures for Record Tests

Anti Doping Responsibilities Following Record Breaking Performances

All athletes and event organisers should be aware of the regulations regarding the ratification of World, Area and British records.

World & European Records

Under IAAF regulations, World Records in standard events (senior, junior and indoor) can only be ratified if the performance is subject to doping control immediately after the conclusion of the event. This also applies to European records.

Where World Records or European Records are set in running events, walking events and combined events the athlete’s sample must also be tested for rh-EPO (in such cases a blood sample shall be taken if it is practicable to do so).

Where an athlete sets a World or European Record they should immediately report to doping control (all members of the team for relays) and request that a sample be collected. If there is no doping control at the event the athlete should report to the event organiser for further assistance.

British athletes setting World or European Records and Event Organisers of events in the UK where World or European Records are set and there is no doping control should contact David Herbert, Anti Doping Manager for UK Athletics, on 07803 671978 for further advice.

Failure to submit to doping control immediately after a World or European Record is likely to result in the record not being ratified.

British Records

Athletes setting Senior British records in standard events (a table of standard events is given at the end of this document) should report to doping control at the event immediately following the conclusion of the event in which the record was set and ask for a sample to be collected. UK Athletics will pay for the cost of tests for Senior British Records where payment is requested.

If anti doping services are present at an event where you set a British Record, and you fail to submit to testing, you will be asked to explain why during the ratification process.

If there is no doping control at your event then you are not required to submit to doping control for ratification.

There is no requirement for drug tests for Junior British Records or for British Records for non-standard events.

Home Country Records and UK All-Comers records

There is no requirement for drug testing following a home country national record or an all-comers record however should the record also be a British record then you should refer to the section above.
